Discovery Series: Medium, Message & Meaning

Spoken words, written emails, recorded novels, tweeted messages, printed newspapers, TV newscasts: does a human message change depending on its medium? If we listen to JFK’s inaugural address on our radio 500 miles away from Washington, D.C., do we feel the same power as the people standing fifty feet from President-elect? Just as important, can a dictionary written twenty years earlier capture the essence of a single word written today? And more important, can any written dictionary accurately measure the meaning of a spoken word? Taught by former Souderton Area High School English teacher and tutor Darryl J. Smith.

Please register at the Reference Desk or by calling 215-723-9109 ext. 3.
