Sleeping Mat Project
Oct 11 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am

The Sleeping Mat Project
Helping the Homeless, While Recycling!
Did you know recycled grocery bags can create colorful, woven mats for homeless individuals in your community? Through a partnership with Integrate for Good and Angels in Motion, the Indian Valley Public Library is joining the project. Each week community members will join to learn different parts of the project including cutting bags, making loops, making “plarn” (plastic yarn), and weaving the mats on a loom.

Anyone is welcome to join us!

Contact Nicole Husbands at nhusbands@ivpl.org for information or with questions.

Brown Bag Jazz
Oct 11 @ 6:00 am – 8:00 am

Bring a lunch and enjoy a recorded concert from the Digital Concert Network. Featuring Wynton Marsalis’s Spaces.

—-

Wynton Marsalis’ Spaces combines modern dance with big band jazz in a playful and wildly entertaining exploration of the animal kingdom. Each of Spaces’ ten movements corresponds to a different animal, from “King Lion” to “Bees, Bees, Bees,” offering a dazzling array of sights and sounds that express the diversity, humor, and quirky majesty found in nature. The same two singular dance geniuses from the Spaces premiere—Lil Buck and Jared Grimes—reprise their roles, leaping, sliding, flipping, and tap dancing across the stage. Lil Buck is a groundbreaking young dancer who has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Madonna, the New York City Ballet, and Cirque du Soleil. Grimes is a versatile tap dancer who has won the Astaire Award, choreographed for multiple Broadway shows and Cirque Du Soleil, and performed internationally with artists ranging from Wynton Marsalis and Gregory Hines to Mariah Carey and The Roots.
Damian Woetzel, choreographer and retired Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet, returns as director and choreographic consultant, seamlessly integrating the dance with Marsalis’ musical compositions. Spaces is a one-of-a-kind collaboration that is both an ode to the glory of nature and an extraordinary display of human achievement.

Appropriate for all ages in spirit and years, this special concert is the debut performance of a previously unfinished work. Composed with the concept of an “animal ballet” in mind, Wynton Marsalis’ Spaces will attempt to recapture the natural fascination we have with the sounds and movements of animals. Movement is an essential aspect of both jazz music and natural life itself, and two extraordinary dance geniuses represent this connection in their work: Lil’ Buck, a groundbreaking young artist recently seen with Yo-Yo Ma, Madonna, and Cirque du Soleil; and Jared Grimes, a quadruple-threat tap dancer who in 2014 won the Astaire Award and choreographed on Broadway for After Midnight and Holler If Ya Hear Me.

Damian Woetzel, choreographer and retired Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet, acts as choreographic consultant and will work with both dancers on the overall structure and choreography for Spaces, seamlessly integrating it with Marsalis’ musical composition. They join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in the world premiere of this visually captivating performance.
